The flagship event of the Echo of the Hills and Valleys association (1) was Saturday October 21, Place Léontine, the day dedicated to Pink October. “The only thing that didn’t work was the weather – we don’t have a village hall – fortunately the Community of Communes of Haute-Saintonge (CDCHS) put four Tivoli at our disposal, we were at shelter,” comments Gérard Malhomme, president of the association. And there was a lot of clearing up. All day long, Catherine Rodriguez-Ravail exhibited paintings on the theme of the female body, a walk on an easy route was planned, meetings and discussions with Marie-Lise Arestay, author of the book “A Century with Breast Cancer » was scheduled, as well as an intervention by nutritionist Linda Hickey, introductions to sophrology by Fabrice Banaszkiewicz… The students of the Studio Jazz danse de Montlieu-La-Garde had created a choreography, “Dance of Hope”, taken up at the end of the day by all the participants, in a great intergenerational spirit.
Breast palpation
People came for different workshops. Women concerned by the problem, but also young men who felt involved. The Saintes Screening Center had a bust to explain breast palpation, to be carried out once a month in the shower. A 38-year-old young woman testified to the difficulty she had before being able to have a mammogram done. Comments echoing the book by Marie-Lise Arestay, where she talks regarding her breast cancer, like her mother and her grandmother. She read passages from her book where she noted that screening is difficult in rural areas, she also spoke regarding the third of women affected before the age of 55 and the difficulty of reconciling work and therapy. The president of the Fleur d’Isa association, Sylvie Rouquié, spoke regarding the actions undertaken to improve the daily lives of patients… The day is the result of the federation of a lot of energy deployed around breast cancer.
