Painters for Gaza: The world is not as bad as it seems

Despite this absolute support by Western governments and companies for Israel, there are also many voices defending the Palestinian cause. In the midst of this gloomy atmosphere in which we live, these voices and the massive demonstrations of support that took place in several capitals may make us feel that the world is not as bad as it seems, and that there are living consciences and beating hearts of humanity everywhere. Among these influential voices from outside the Arab region, there are many prominent artists and cartoonists who have declared their clear and frank solidarity with the Palestinian cause. On her Instagram page, the American artist, Molly Costello, asked her followers to join her and millions of others around the world in rejecting the genocide of the Palestinian people and stopping American military aid to Israel. Costello has been in solidarity with the people of Gaza since the beginning of the war, and constantly reminds her followers of the atrocities committed by Israel since the establishment of its state.
The artist was not satisfied with just condemning, but also specified what her followers should do in seven points, including listening to Palestinian voices and reading regarding the history of the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Costello believes that people in the United States’ lack of sufficient knowledge regarding this issue is a tool used to manipulate them. At the end of her post, Costello asked her followers to donate to the Palestinian people and raise the Palestinian flag everywhere, indicating that she would delete any Zionist comments on her post.
This protest leaflet was accompanied by the American artist with an artistic design bearing the phrase, “Rise up once morest genocide… Freedom for Palestine.” Molly Costello works as a graphic and print designer. Her designs are characterized by a combination of writing and drawing. She is known for drawing inspiration from plant and tree elements in her designs. She also dedicates her work to advocating environmental preservation and world peace.
Molly Costello is not the only artist, from outside the Arab region, who expresses her solidarity with the Palestinians with such strength and clarity. There are other artists who share the same anger. Among these artists is the Brazilian cartoonist Carlos Latuff, who is one of the most famous names in the Arab region, due to his constant interaction with current events in the region. Since the beginning of the Arab Spring, Lattouf has devoted part of his work to commenting on events, adopting the side of revolutions and criticizing the ruling regimes in Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Libya, and other Arab countries that witnessed popular uprisings once morest their political systems. From the first moments of the war on Gaza, Lattouf returned once once more to share his opinion on what is happening in this region through his scathing cartoons. In his recent cartoons, Lattouf regularly criticized the international community for its silence regarding the massacres committed by Israel once morest the Palestinians. In one of these cartoons, Lattouf expresses that the United Nations and Arab regimes ignore these massacres, while the United States and Europe stand up and demand that the victims remain silent and not scream.
The Palestinian issue occupies an important aspect of the interest of cartoonists in Latin American countries. In addition to Lattouf, the Mexican artist Antonio Rodrigo also stands out. Since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on Gaza, the Mexican artist has devoted most of his work to expressing a point of view in solidarity with the Palestinians. In these drawings, the Mexican artist highlights the West’s complicity with Israel in this war. In one of these works, Rodrigo depicts the Israeli war machine in the form of a bulldozer, and Palestine in the form of a house with roots that are difficult to uproot. In another work, the artist painted Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, in the form of an eagle, as she follows the massacres being committed in Gaza on television, indifferent to what is happening to her people.
Among the American painters who adopted the defense of the Palestinian cause is the American Angelica Frosto, who is an indigenous person of the United States. Frosto is known for her advocacy for indigenous people, and her interest extends to similar issues around the world, including the Palestinian issue. In the midst of the ongoing war, the artist expressed her position with a symbolic painting in which Palestine is represented in the form of a deer whose land was invaded by a sea turtle. The American artist does not stop denouncing the brutal crimes of the Zionist entity, which she describes as a strange entity.

Among the European artists who took a clear and strong stance towards the Israeli aggression on Gaza is Swedish Karen Zaric, who expressed her solidarity with the people of Gaza with a painting she posted on her Instagram page. In this painting, which Zaric placed as her own portrait, Ghassan Kanafani’s book, “The Land of Sad Oranges,” appears lying among the rubble of Gaza, over which the Israeli flag is raised. Along with the painting, the artist wrote a text explaining the dimensions of the Palestinian issue, and how the Palestinian lands have been stolen from their owners since the Nakba, piece by piece. Zaric says this theft will continue until there is no more Palestinian land to seize, or until the international community forces this usurping entity to stop.
