The Fourons police intercepted on Tuesday, during a control operation carried out with customs, a truck loaded with 106 barrels of chemical waste. These came from a Walloon factory.

The control operation specifically targeted the transport of waste. “In recent months, we have observed several illegal transports of waste passing through Mouland (Fonons) towards the Netherlands.“, explained Bjorn Leesen, chief inspector of the Fourons police.

In total, 25 vehicles were checked. The biggest find was a truck carrying 106 barrels of chemical waste. The driver had not fulfilled any conditions for transporting such substances. The cargo was transferred under police escort to a specialized Liège company, which will destroy the waste.

The local police of Les Fourons, the Limburg public prosecutor’s office and the Public Service of Wallonia (SPW) are carrying out a more in-depth investigation into the origin of the barrels. Several fines have been drawn up and the driver will have to appear in court. Furthermore, a driver had to pay a fine of 1,500 euros for using red diesel (i.e. heating oil colored red) as fuel. A repeat offender, he had to pay it immediately. All of the blood alcohol tests administered were negative.
