[EN VIDÉO] Hyperloop One wants to connect Dubai to Abu Dhabi in 12 minutes The North American company Hyperloop One has announced an agreement with the municipality of Dubai (UAE…
Very attractive on paper, Hyperloop technology is a real sea serpent. For more than ten years, experiments have been taking place all over the world, and even in France, to test this system of capsules devoid of frictionfriction which move at very high speedspeed in vacuum tubes of airair. For the moment, despite the enthusiasm, there is nothing very promising.
So, rather than transporting passengers, some companies are considering this process for the rapid delivery of goods. This is what HyperloopTT offers with its concept Express Freight. In addition to vacuum tubes and cargo transport capsules, loading and unloading would be fully automated. The capsules are supposed to move at a speed of up to 1,223 km/h thanks to a maglev system in low pressure tubes.
Despite many questions regarding the feasibility and even the ecological benefits of such a process compared to current freight transport systems, a feasibility study dated 2019 had already determined that a high-speed hyperloop freight system would be more profitable such as air or truck transportation. A study that HyperloopTT considered as a “green light” to make its project a reality.

A hyperloop for freight in Italy?
With this report and major funding, particularly from Europe, HyperloopTT therefore aims to develop its freight transport system by maximizing the volume of freight in the capsules to load and unload the freight as quickly as possible once arrived at what is required. is called a “HyperPort”. Express Freight must therefore adapt to different containers, whether those intended for air freight, or large containers for maritime transport.
To save as much time as possible, loading and unloading operations are planned to be done simultaneously using door-doors and conveyor belts located on each side of the tube. In other words, the capsules must remain docked for as short a time as possible. Until it one day emerges from the ground, the Express Freight project seems to be on track and might make its first slides in tubes in Italy.
Hyperloop: following passengers, the transport of goods at more than 600 km/h
The company Hyperloop TT has just presented a very high-speed freight transport concept, capable of transporting goods at more than 600 km/h. Will this vacuum train be able to compete with planes and container ships as the company claims?

In the race for very high speed trains, Hyperloop TT (Hyperloop Transportation Technologies) wants to show his difference. Alongside passenger trains traveling at more than 1,000 km/h in a low-pressure tube, the company presented a freight transport concept at the beginning of July. with a speed equivalent to that of the plane but at the cost of the train “. The project, called HyperPort, will allow up to 2,800 containers to be transported per day at a speed of 600 km/h. Enough to ensure delivery “ in minutes instead of several hours ”, and all this with a zero carbon footprint, according to Hyperloop TT.
Move ports inland
The company positions itself above all as a competitor to maritime traffic, explaining that it wants “ move ports inland ». « Using the same technology as our passenger systems, the HyperPort future-proofs supply chains and frees up waterfront space that would otherwise be used for shipping ports », assures Andres De Leon, CEO of HyperloopTT. And to praise the many other advantages of his concept: no climatic hazards (the train traveling in a closed tube), no crossing (and therefore risk of accident) and less pollution by the sea.

Designed in partnership with the German company Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AGAG (HHLA) and the Spanish engineering firm CT Ingenieros, the project will be presented in virtual reality at the next World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) which will be held in Hamburg next October. Although it has already accumulated 20,000 hours of studies, the HyperPort project is far from being operational. In 2019, the company built a 320-meter test tunnel near Toulouse, but the construction project for a one-kilometer test track fell behind schedule, notably due to administrative and decontamination constraints. land from the former Francazal mine.
Hyperloop train: competition rages
The race once morest time is on with its main rivals, Virgin Hyperloop and TransPod. The first, which had also already presented a cargo transport project in 2018, carried out a 500 meter test in November 2020 in its pilot installation in North Las VegasVegas in Nevada (United States) with two passengers on board, and promises commercial operation by 2030. In 2019, the company also signed with Saudi Arabia to develop and test its technology there. Not far from the first commercial line planned by Hyperloop TT, which was to connect Dubai to Abu Dhabi in less than 12 minutes.

Truly eco-friendly transportation?
It remains to be seen whether all these projects are economically and technologically viable. In 2018, a French expert denounced a “tremendous technical-intellectual scam”, notably denouncing several technical impasses. It is also difficult to believe that the cost of transporting goods will be identical to that of the conventional train, or even the plane. In 2016, documents had leaked estimating the cost of building a Virgin Hyperloop line at $121 million per mile (€63.4 million per kilometer). The “zero CO2 emissions” argument should also be taken with a grain of salt, because evacuating air from the tube requires a large amount of energy. And this will not solve the pollution generated by the millions of trucks on our highways, which provide medium-distance transport.
