Public health France published a “cancer map” in 2019 (between 2007 and 2018). In Hauts-de-France, we observe a number of cases and a mortality rate higher than the national average for breast cancer in women but also the prostate, lung, liver and bladder in men.

The National Cancer Institute explains: “Due to a change in case registration coding method, updated mortality data is not available» and therefore stop in 2018.

The standardized mortality rate decreased among women between 2010 and 2018. “ The overall reduction in mortality is the result of earlier diagnoses and significant therapeutic advances, particularly among the most common cancers.», of which breast cancer is one.

Nationally, the departments of Pas-de-Calais and Nord as well as the Somme are at the top of the areas where breast cancer mortality is the highest. The Aisne arrives next. Four departments of Hauts-de-France (out of five) are among the ten departments in France where the rate is the highest.

Certain risky behaviors such as tobacco and alcohol consumption and being overweight partly explain the figures in certain regions, according to Public Health France.

2023, highest number of breast cancers since 1990

The League Against Cancer summarizes: “After doubling between 1980 and 2005, then a slight decrease observed for breast cancers between 2004 and 2008, the number of new cases seems to be on the rise once more. The projections for 2023, which take into account the increase that followed, correspond to the highest level since 1990

However, the League specifies that mortality is gradually decreasing. “ The result of enormous progress, both in terms of screening and medical treatment of the disease.” Today, three out of four breast cancers are cured.
