Biography
Alan Shepard (Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr (1923-1998) was the first American astronaut.) was born on November 18, 1923, in East Derry, New Hampshire.
He is the son of Alan Bartlett Shepard Sr, colonel of the American army and Renza Emerson. On March 3, 1945, he married Louise Brewer (+ August 25, 1998), from whom they had two daughters: Laura (1947) and Juliana (1951).
He studied at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he entered in 1944.
He was selected in 1959 by the brand new NASA to be part of the first group of seven astronauts in the Mercury program.
Alan Shepard was the only Mercury program astronaut to walk on the Moon.
