National Council meets on neutrality | SN.at

The National Council meets on Wednesday at an unusual time, namely immediately before the national holiday and later in the followingnoon. The FPÖ is calling for a special meeting on the issue of neutrality, which it sees as endangered, as well as Austria’s sovereignty. In this regard, an “urgent application” will be submitted to the federal government.

The Freedom Party cites, among other things, Austria’s support for Ukraine as a reason why, in their view, neutrality is being undermined. They see the country’s sovereignty as being endangered by, among other things, various EU regulations such as the regulations in refugee policy.

It is unlikely that Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, who was invited to the meeting by Kickl in an open letter, will actually take part. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) is in Israel on Wednesday. Instead of him, State Secretary Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP) will answer the “urgent” question.
