Martin Ebner and Daniel Deák studied in Salzburg and are now fulfilling a big dream. They make their own mechanical watches. The first series is sold out.
The market for mechanical watches is booming. As a result of the corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine, there was a sharp increase in sales and the used market also recorded a record high last year. Switzerland is still in the lead, exporting mechanical watches with a total value of around 20.59 billion Swiss francs (21.5 billion euros) in 2022. Now two people from Salzburg have taken the step and are presenting their own watch brand called “Sphaera”. This term comes from Latin and means “ball”.
The Hungarian-born Daniel Deák and his business partner Martin Ebner talk regarding the reasons for their project: “We both love watches. It is our goal to create something for people that they can always associate beautiful memories with.”
Brand name refers to Salzburg
They chose the name of the brand to associate Salzburg with, among other things, the Mozartkugel or the golden ball on Chapter Square.
Daniel Deák has been active in the watch scene in the recent past. He took photos at the events for various magazines and now takes care of the marketing, shoots videos and photographs the watches.
Grew up in Faistenau
Managing director Martin Ebner grew up on a small farm in Faistenau. “Even as a child, I always built everything myself. I was interested in new products and tried to bring some onto the market myself. For example, I built electric guitars and made leather straps,” remembers Ebner.
With his business partner, now is the perfect time to present his own mechanical watch. Both Ebner and Deák studied in Salzburg.
