A large number of companies in the Netherlands avoid rules for the reuse of plastic packaging for food and drinks. This does not reduce the amount of plastic litter. The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) reported this on Tuesday.
The inspection service emphasizes that what the companies do is not illegal, but it is undesirable. That makes it difficult to take action once morest it.
The ILT sees different practices among companies. For example, they use softer plastic that does not fall under rules for reuse. Cardboard packaging has also become more popular, although it does contain plastic.
Furthermore, there are companies that adjust products and packaging slightly and then designate them as reusable or washable. “But in many cases the packaging is not significantly different,” ILT explains. The inspection service has summarized its findings in a report, which was sent to the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
Stricter rules have been in place for more than two years to prevent a lot of plastic from ending up in nature. More rules were added halfway through this year. For example, companies must charge extra money for disposable packaging and are obliged to offer a reusable alternative.
