Error at Schönbrunn Zoo: 13 of 15 flamingos killed in one night

2023-10-24 06:58:00

13 of 15 animals are dead. The two remaining birds were handed over to another zoo. “Unfortunately, a mistake happened. People forgot to bring the animals into the indoor facility,” confirmed APA spokeswoman Johanna Bukovsky in a “Kurier” report on Monday.

According to the zoo, the animals are usually brought into the indoor enclosure following closing time – depending on the temperatures. That was supposed to have happened that night too, but it didn’t happen this time. That’s why the electric protective fence was not activated, the zoo said.

“We actually have extensive protective measures”

The zoo said on Monday that it deeply regretted the mistake. “The problem that there are foxes in the zoo is well known,” said Bukovsky. “We actually have extensive protective measures,” said the spokeswoman. This includes, among other things, a modern external fence around the entire zoo area.

The “Kurier” report said they now want to point out guidelines and work processes once more in connection with the incident. The zoo will now set up live traps in cooperation with the municipal department 49 (MA 49). The two remaining birds were handed over to the Schmiding Zoo in Upper Austria.

There is now only one flamingo colony at Schönbrunn Zoo. These are the pink flamingos.
