Brazilian doctors managed to successfully separate two conjoined twins who were born joined at the skull. Little Allana and Mariah, two years and 10 months old, are recovering from a 27-hour surgery they underwent on August 19, according to the O Globo channel. Before that, they had already undergone surgery three times.
The girls were born in Piquerobi, a small town in the interior of the state of San Pablo. Her mother, Talita Cestari, is a teacher and her father, Vinicius, is a service station manager. ”For me it was a shock. I knew they were united, but I had no idea how much […] Allana and Mariah teach us a lot, we adapt with them,” said the mother.

As they knew that in their city they were not going to get specialized care for the girls, thanks to the help of neighbors they moved to Ribeirão Preto, regarding 500 km away, where they obtained the help of doctors from the Hospital de Clínicas de la Universidad de San Pablo.
The last surgery began on August 19 at 06:30 and ended the next day at 09:30. According to the doctors, there were several procedures to progressively separate the veins and give the girls’ brains time to get used to and recover.
The process of reconstructing the skulls of the conjoined twins involved an unprecedented technique. In the penultimate surgery, doctors extracted stem cells from the girls’ pelvis, which went through a super-rigorous selection process before being used in the final surgery, four months later.

“The biomaterial is placed between the bones, as if it were a floor joint. Improves circulation, reduces inflammation. Because it has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. We are pioneers in this technique,” highlights plastic surgeon Hélio Machado, from the Hospital de Clínicas of the University of São Paulo.

The case of the sisters is rare: there have been just over 500 conjoined twin births in the last 11 years in Brazil. When the twins are joined at the back, top or side of the head, they are called craniopagus.

Regarding the case of the twins, Machado stated that it was “the rarity of rarity.” “Throughout my career, I have never had another case like this,” he said.
The little ones were finally discharged 52 days following the last surgery. “After 3 weeks it was a surprise for us, because they began to communicate, to talk,” the doctors highlighted.
As indicated by the g1 site, Mariah’s evolution is a little slower than Allana’s. They both still have a long treatment ahead of them.
