Opposition leader María Corina Machado won the opposition primary elections in Venezuela this weekend, following obtaining 93% of the votes. The National Primary Commission indicated that more than a million people participated in the election day.

As expected, Machado’s victory provoked different reactions and comments in Colombia. One of the last to speak out was Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, who once once more strongly criticized President Gustavo Petro, since he has not referred to this issue.

President Petro, while you congratulate Argentina, for what you call a ‘triumph over barbarism’, your silence regarding María Corina’s victory in the primary elections is surprising. It is even more surprising that he has not questioned the disability imposed on him. “This inability is an arbitrary and undemocratic act by the Maduro regime,” he initially indicated.

Finally, the congressman stated: “However, his complicit silence regarding Machado’s victory in the primaries and its consequences is notable. President, will you be the guarantor that María Corina Machado is allowed to participate in the election, or, as always, will you turn a blind eye to the undemocratic and corrupt acts of her allies?
