(CNN Spanish) –– The Secretary of Security of Coyuca de Benítez, Guerrero, Alfredo Alonso López, and 10 municipal police officers died in an armed attack this Monday, the state’s Deputy Prosecutor for Investigation, Gabriel Alejandro Hernández Martínez, reported in a broadcast via Facebook.

Hernández Martínez indicated that the Guerrero Prosecutor’s Office already has two lines of investigation into the attack, which he did not reveal. He also added that officials from the institution have already gone to the area to continue the investigations.

CNN contacted the municipal presidency of Coyuca de Benítez for more information regarding the incident, but has not received a response.

Coyuca de Benítez is a municipality in the Costa Grande region of Guerrero – in southern Mexico – a state with high levels of violence. Between January and September of this year, 1,280 intentional homicides were recorded in the state, which places it as the seventh with the most crimes of this type among the 32 entities in the country, according to the official crime incidence report for October.

This attack once morest the police officers of Coyuca de Benítez reflects the problems of violence that these corporations face in Mexico.

A report from the non-governmental organization Causa en Común indicates that as of October 19 of this year, 341 police officers had been murdered in the country. So far in the six-year term of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador – which began on December 1, 2018 – there are 2,159, according to the same NGO, which monitors the problem through what the press reports.
