Collective bargaining negotiations for the approximately 430,000 employees in the retail, wholesale and motor vehicle trades begin on Tuesday morning (11 a.m.) at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce in Vienna. The union is demanding a salary increase above the inflation rate of the past twelve months. From October 2022 to September 2023, inflation was 9.2 percent. Employers expect “challenging” collective bargaining negotiations due to the real decline in sales in retail.
In the previous year, the rolling inflation used as the basis for negotiations for the trade collective agreement was 6.9 percent. After five rounds of negotiations and a strike threat, employer and employee representatives agreed on a salary increase of 7 percent and at least 145 euros from January 1, 2023. According to the union, this brought the average increase in KV salaries to 7.3 percent. The increase in minimum salaries was up to 8.7 percent. Since then, the full-time starting salary for commercial employees has been 1,945 euros gross per month (1,535 euros net).
Almost two thirds of retail employees in Austria are women; in retail the proportion of women is even higher. Almost 60 percent of women in retail work part-time, while the part-time rate for men is only around 13 percent.
