IWS thoughts on the 2023 parliamentary elections in Austria’s neighboring country

Linz (OTS) “The global changes are of great concern to us. The future scenarios of the European Union are currently being intensively discussed before the European parliamentary elections and the new appointment of the Commission. “But we don’t pay enough attention to a neighbor with whom we share important economic, political, scientific and cultural aspects: Switzerland,” says Christoph Leitl, President of the Upper Austrian Business Location Initiative (IWS), in view of today’s federal parliamentary elections.

Leitl gives some suggestions on what we can learn from Switzerland:

  • Switzerland’s path to success began when individual cantons became a federal state. Who doesn’t immediately think of Europe in this context?
  • Switzerland is organized decentrally and has done very well thanks to competition between cantons, particularly in the area of autonomous tax policy. Who doesn’t immediately think of Austria in this context?
  • How does Switzerland manage to ensure a competitive economy with the highest quality of life for its citizens? Two main answers: With a more efficient bureaucracy and a massively lower tax burden. A possible role model for Austria?
  • Swiss quality is world-renowned. 7 out of 10 young people do dual training in this country. A role model for Europe?
  • Who knows that Switzerland’s most exported commodity is not chocolate, but Red Bull? This company has set up shop in Switzerland in order to benefit from taxation on the one hand, but also to be independent of possible politically motivated economic sanctions on the other. A wise attitude. Something to think regarding for Europe?
  • Free movement of people and a liberal labor market have not only not harmed Switzerland, but have benefited it. Hello Austria, what does our neighbor do better?
  • The political cooperation of the most important parties without the requirement for unanimity has not harmed a vibrant democracy, but it has benefited through unanimity on the essential issues. You can also draw conclusions from this!
  • Mentality. Reason. Cosmopolitanism. Economic friendliness. Liberal thinking. Of course, not everything is perfect in our neighboring country either. But there are many things we should think regarding, learn from, and improve ourselves.
