South Tyrol election trend: SVP with heavy losses, less than 35 percent

2023-10-22 21:05:53

After around 25 percent of the votes were counted, Governor Arno Kompatscher’s “collective party” initially ended up with 33.7 percent. In the state election in 2018, following all votes were counted, it was still at 41.9 percent.

According to the counting status so far, Team K, the surprise winner of the last election, ranked second. The group initially landed at 10.3 percent – following 15.2 percent in 2018. In third place would be the South Tyrolean Freedom and the Greens with 8.9 percent each. This would mean a significant plus for both parties – the former got 6 percent in 2018 and the Eco Party got 6.8 percent. A winner of the election would be Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni’s right-wing Fratelli D’Italia, which would currently receive 7.7 percent of the vote in South Tyrol (2018: 1.7 percent).

The Freedom Party would perform disappointingly with around 4 percent. In 2018 they were at 6.2 percent. The list “For South Tyrol with Widmann” by ex-SVP regional councilor Thomas Widmann is unlikely to make any big leaps either. According to the first trend, it is 3.8 percent. Matteo Salvini’s Lega, the SVP’s previous coalition partner, would also have to suffer considerable losses in the autonomous province – it would only achieve 3.7 percent (2018: 11.1 percent) and would therefore remain well behind the other right-wing, Italian-speaking party Fratelli D’ Italy back.

There are no projections for the South Tyrolean state elections. The first results come from electoral sections in the smaller communities.
