In spring, flowers become the main figures to beautify the decoration of homes, stores and even events. But among so many species, one attracts attention because it has an enormous value attributed to its care: orchids.
Caring for this flower may seem complex and difficult, but in reality, they are delicate flowers that require little care, only needing special attention per week.
And to answer your questions and inspire you to decorate your garden with orchids, we invited the specialist in decoration with natural flowers Maria Pietroforte to help you with care and cultivation tips.
Types of orchids
There are several species that circulate on the floral market. They are called by abbreviations, which, according to Maria, are the most popular among those who collect the flower. “There are countless species of orchids, cataloged and uncatalogued. The most common, especially for home decoration, are Phalaenopsispopularly known as ‘butterflies’”, says the expert.
She further explains that among the less common species, some can be found by other names: “There are those that can be called by other names, such as dendrobium, note, cymbidium or denphal. However, there is a species desired by many which is the Wandaa hanging orchid that does not need a vase, as its roots are exposed and its flower is large and full of flowers” explains Maria.
Essential care
Despite being delicate, orchids are easy to care for. Maria says that the care to keep it blooming all year round requires small contributions throughout the week. “Orchids do not need to be exposed to the sun, just keep them close to natural light, that will be enough. As for water, just once a week,” she says.
And she gives tips for those who haven’t yet replanted their orchid in a specific pot. “The ideal is to immerse the vase in which the flowers are sold in another container with water for a maximum of 20 seconds. Now, if they are planted in another pot, add water, without soaking the plant, for a period of once a week”, she adds.
Another important factor when evaluating the care of your orchid is understanding where it should be located. Some species require suspended cultivation, such as the orchid Wandahowever some species may require slightly more complex cultivation practices.
Maria says that there are species that can be grown from the soil of other plants: “Some orchids are in fact terrestrial, but this is not the case with the most common ones. Most species are epiphytes, that is, they live on other plants. Therefore, it is common to see trees on some streets with several orchids planted on the trunk”, says the decorator. “When in doubt regarding the health of your orchid, check the roots. They should be green and not look rotten”, she concludes.
Be careful when giving someone a gift
If you like to please a loved one with flowers, know that orchids are great options. But be careful when detailing the essential care instructions for whoever is given as a gift. Maria warns that when transporting the gift, it is necessary to keep it protected: “Flowers are extremely sensitive. In transport, the important thing is to protect them. By carrying out the right care, the gift experience tends to last for more than 20 days”, she concludes.
A good tip is to include a card with all the information regarding orchid care, this way the gift for the desired person will last much longer.
Now that you know everything regarding this iconic plant, your home will be ready to be decorated with the incomparable beauty of orchids.
