The Union of Republican Forces (UFR) led by Sidya Touré held its weekly general assembly this Saturday, October 21, 2023. Party executives took this opportunity to express their support to the Guinean press.
On Monday October 16, 2023, the Union of Press Professionals of Guinea (SPPG) called for a march once morest the blocking of the Guineematin.com site since August 15, 2023. The demonstration was repressed. Journalists were injured, and 13 of them arrested before being brought before the Kaloum Court.
“Our everyday friends (journalists) were violated, they were in the street to demand their rights, and we come to violate them, arrest them and send them to a police station. 13 journalists arrested, brutalized, others injured, even in Burma we have never seen this. On behalf of the executive office, this is the place to tell them that we share their pain. You (journalists) have defended values, and you continue to defend them. But, instead of helping you shine, we’re here to extinguish you, so be united. I know that with your union, surely, you will succeed in your fight,” insisted Ousmane Tolo Soumah.
The Secretary General of Youth of the UFR recalls that several political leaders fought for press freedom in Guinea. He invites journalists to unite to carry out their mission. “It was not Mamadi Doumbouya who gave freedom of the press, it was a fight that was waged when we were at school. Sidya Touré, like so many others, fought for press freedom. So we can’t stay without defending you. You defended us during the attack on the president’s home [de l’UFR], you were there. You defended those who were there to shut down when slates were put around their necks to photograph them. If these same people turn once morest you, don’t be surprised, that’s life. But be courageous, continue your fight, and do not tremble.”
