“Any airport user is now more likely to miss a flight, because of the parking system, than because of the time it takes to go through security – it’s simply a joke!”

A reader contacted us to denounce online reservation system of parking spaces for the airport, put in place for several years (before Covid). “You can’t reserve a parking space unless you do it well in advance (more than a day in advance),” he explains. When booking you have to provide an estimated arrival and departure time to/from the car park… but nowhere is it explained what happens if your return flight is delayed and you overstay your check-in time. departure from the car park mentioned in the reservation.

“Car lines”

If you just decide to drive in (at the last minute or if you were unable to book due to a system outage), ‘all parking lots (underground or outdoor except Kiss & Fly) are marked by default as full”, but if you ring the barriers, and are lucky enough that someone answers the call, they allow you to enter, go to level -3 (underground), ring the barrier once more , then park the car and walk to the level -1 (security) counter to obtain an entry ticket, he continues. The time lost would be “15 to 20 minutes” with this “absurd” approach.

“While waiting for security to answer the call or open the barrier (from their counter), lines of cars now form waiting to have access to pass through the barriers (even those who have reserved a parking space cannot not enter because they have cars in front of them), completes the reader. You see cars reversing because they can’t get through (so multiple cars have to reverse), cars changing lanes because they think there’s a problem with a barrier, so on and so forth…”

Increase in attendance

Contacted, lux-Airport points out that the quota of parking spaces is not 100% allocated to a prior reservation, and “it is therefore sometimes no longer possible to make short-term reservations”. On site, parking management “helps when necessary and allocates free parking spaces,” confirms the airport management company. Depending on the current situation, parking spaces are released at short notice and are occasionally allocated directly at the barrier.

Lux-Airport also recalls that the airport is “much busier” this year than in previous years, particularly during peak hours. “This pleasing enthusiasm also leads to an increase in traffic and with this, of course, high demands for parking,” adds the company. Faced with this situation, she emphasizes that the parking guidance systems “will be renewed” and that the extension of the parking management space in the underground car park is “already underway”. Thus, more capacity “will be available in case of requests”.
