Shift to the right in the election in Switzerland: National Conservative SVP in the lead

2023-10-22 14:58:13

According to projections by Swiss television, the party that wants to limit immigration has a share of 29.0 percent. The last polling stations closed on Sunday at 12 p.m.

According to the figures, the SVP was able to practically make up for the losses in the last elections to the National Council. At that time, the party led by billionaire Christoph Blocher got 25.6 percent. According to the projections, the Greens performed significantly worse than before. After a record high 13.2 percent in the 2019 election, which was heavily influenced by climate discussions, their share has now fallen to 9.1 percent. The Social Democrats made slight gains. Overall, the large chamber of the Swiss Parliament is likely to move slightly to the right.

Experts rate the influence of the elections on political decisions in the coming years as low. The parties’ shares in the seven-member coalition government will probably not be affected in the parliamentary elections in December. More important for politics in Switzerland than the elections are the quarterly referendums on issues that limit the scope of action of the government and parliament. This is also reflected in the voter turnout. According to projections, only 46.5 percent of those eligible to vote went to the polls on Sunday. The official final result should not be available until around midnight. However, major shifts were no longer expected.
