The elections for Argentine citizens residing abroad began this Sunday in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, and in Sydney, one of the most important cities in Australia. According to the information provided this Sunday by the national Foreign Ministry, the vote is advancing at a steady pace in the national consulates and embassies of different countries.

“Argentinians are already voting in Wellington, New Zealand,” reported the portfolio led by Santiago Cafiero on its Twitter social network account.

A few hours later, they highlighted that the election is also taking place in China, South Korea, Indonesia, India and Spain, among other countries.

It is important to note that, on this occasion, the voting stations in Israel were not open as a result of the war taking place in the Middle East. “Aware of the publicly known situation and the fact that the limitations published by the National Emergency Portal of Israel remain in force, it is reported that ON OCTOBER 22, 2023 THE VOTING TABLES WILL NOT BE OPENED IN THIS JURISDICTION,” it reads. the statement issued last Tuesday by the Argentine Embassy on Israeli soil.

A similar situation occurs in Ukraine, where table 214 will not be enabled for Argentines to cast their vote either. The reason? The war conflict that the Ukrainian country maintains with Russia.

Until 2017, those who resided outside the country were required to complete a procedure to exercise their right to vote. Since then, an automatic registration system was implemented for Argentines who live outside the borders, as long as they have a DNI and registered address abroad.

Registration is carried out in the consulates corresponding to the electoral district linked to your address outside Argentina. Unlike what happens in the national territory, voting is optional.

It is important to note that voters abroad have limitations in their choice of representatives. Their right to vote extends only to national positions, therefore, they cannot elect provincial or municipal representatives from their places of residence abroad. In the case of national deputies and senators, they elect the representatives of the province where their last domicile in Argentina is located.

Argentine citizens who modified their DNI before April 25 and who are registered in the registry of Argentines abroad are authorized to vote. The right to cast a vote extends to the constituency corresponding to your place of residence abroad.

The valid documents for voting are both the new DNI card and the DNI light blue booklet, the DNI light blue booklet card that contains the legend “Not valid for voting”, the DNI green booklet, the enrollment booklet and the civic booklet.

The hours of the electoral process are always from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the city where the voter is located. On the other hand, if there is a second round on November 19, you can vote in the same place where you went for the general elections.

If the voter is Argentine and his or her DNI shows an address in the Argentine Republic, either because he or she is living abroad or is traveling, he or she must justify not casting a vote.

Regarding the election format, the vote is cast through the Single Ballot system designed by the National Electoral Chamber (CNE), which maintains uniformity in all countries. The list highlights the electoral district, the category of the candidates, the date of the election and the slogan ‘Vote for the party’s official candidates’.
