Rémi Bonnet won for the second consecutive year the Golden Trail World Series circuit, one of the benchmark circuits in world trail running, on Sunday in Noli (Italy). The 28-year-old from Friborg finished 4th (1 h 59 min 37 seconds) in the final race of the season, a 26.4 kilometer course with 1,430 m of elevation gain in Liguria.
But with his three successes this season, including a double in the American rounds (Pikes Peak and Mammoth), his lead in the general classification was too great for him to be dispossessed of first place. “My goal was to do it twice today, win the race and the general classification. I gave my best, but the three who were ahead of me were better than me, I mightn’t do better,” said Bonnet.
The last race of the season was won by the Moroccan Elhousine Elazzaoui in 1 h 56 min 15 sec, ahead of the two Kenyans who had already distinguished themselves by ranking in the first two places in Sierre-Zinal in August: Philemon Ombogo Kiriago, 2nd at 15 sec, and Patrick Kipngeno, 3rd at 1 min.
The women’s title was won on Saturday by the American Sophia Laukli in an improbable outcome. The winner of Sierre-Zinal 2023 finished the season with the same number of points as the Swiss Judith Wyder (958). With the benefit of an additional victory compared to her rival, the former cross-country skiing champion was declared the winner.
