At first glance, the situation in road freight transport (RTM) might appear to be flourishing: significant and regular growth in activity and employment, significant gains in productivity, the leading mode, by far, in freight transport…
And yet, all is not well in the sector. From a social point of view, working hours remain high and remuneration quite low, in a tense context due to the diversity of remuneration situations and tax and social charges in Europe. A great disparity in situation exists between large, generally well-established companies and more fragile subcontractors. And the importance of transport in an economy where flows are increasingly tight has increased its vulnerability to recurring social crises which shake up road transport of goods.
The mode is also increasingly criticized on the environmental level, on its integration into the city, on its contribution to road insecurity, and on all the inconveniences and nuisances that it causes. Due to the imperative of carbon neutrality, it will have to completely renew its engines in around twenty years.
We will seek here to describe the situation of road freight transport as it can be assessed through various recent surveys or elements of the technical literature of the sector.
