Around 10 p.m., this Saturday evening, a chase between a truck and the police ended on the Chaussée de Charleroi (N53) in Strée (Beaumont) with the death of the 35-year-old suspect (born in 1988).
A few hours earlier, in the followingnoon, a first scene had already pitted the driver and the local police following a driving accident. “The suspect came to the scene of the accident during the day because he obviously knew one of the victims involved. Given the situation on site, the police invited him to leave the premises to let them do their work,” confirmed Sandrine Vairon, Charleroi division prosecutor, on Sunday morning.
Returning to the police station, the officers realize that the trucker is the subject of a “capture order” and is currently wanted for a case related to malicious obstruction of traffic (dangerous behavior on the road).

Chase and several gunshots
In the evening, the police decided to return to see the driver in order to deprive him of his liberty and bring him back to the police office. In vain… “The suspect was next to his truck, engine running. Tempers got a little heated and the latter got back into his truck to flee instead of complying. A chase began on the Chaussée de Charleroi and the suspect adopted dangerous driving behavior, zigzagging in particular,” adds the judicial authority.
The police combi finally managed to overtake the truck to try to stop it by throwing a portcullis. This first attempt failed. “Given the advance that the officers had on the truck, they decided to put the police van across the road to stop it. Despite the injunctions, the suspect then forced the blockade and the police were forced to fire several times.” According to the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office, the police officers “had no other choice than to fire given the danger”. Unfortunately, one of the shots fatally hit the thirty-year-old who died on the spot.

Two administrative arrests, the police officer who fired the shots heard
Once the death of the suspect, originally from the region, was confirmed, several relatives arrived on site. The tension rose a notch and the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office indicates that there were two administrative arrests. We were told there were nearly 70 police officers on site to manage the situation.
The police officer responsible for the fatal shooting has already been interviewed for the first time. No particular measures were taken once morest him, confirms the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office. It is now Committee P which is taking over the investigation.
