The prominent German artist Anselm Kiefer is designing the Iron Curtain of the Vienna State Opera for the remainder of the 2023/24 season. This was announced on Sunday. The 176 square meter large picture will be presented on November 8th. Since 1998, as part of an exhibition series designed by museum in progress, the original Iron Curtain by Rudolf Eisenmenger (1902-1994) has been covered by an annually changing work with magnets.
Anselm Kiefer (78) was selected by an international jury consisting of Daniel Birnbaum, Bice Curiger and Hans-Ulrich Obrist. The artist, who has lived in France since 1992, is one of the most important contemporary artists with his monumental works and installations, which often draw on history and mythology and incorporate a variety of materials, and has received numerous awards. The documentary “Anselm – The Rushing of Time” by Wim Wenders can currently be seen as part of the Viennale – for example today, Sunday, at 12.30 p.m. in the Gartenbaukino or on Wednesday (October 25th) at 4 p.m. in the Urania.
Kiefer is the 26th artist to create the State Opera’s original Iron Curtain depicting Orpheus and Eurydice. Its creator, NSDAP member Rudolf Eisenmenger, is controversial. Adolf Hitler is said to have been one of the fans of his art. But he also received commissions following the Second World War (for example for the wall hanging in the cinema hall of the Künstlerhaus) and honors such as the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art.
