New Delhi: India has sent aid to the people of Gaza who are suffering greatly during the Israel-Hamas war. Medical and disaster relief supplies were airlifted by the Air Force.

“An Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft carrying 6.5 tons of medical aid and 32 tons of disaster relief materials for the people of Palestine departed for Egypt’s Al Harish airport,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said through e-mail.

The aid sent by India includes life-saving medicines, surgical supplies, tents, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, cleaning supplies and water purification tablets, the Ministry of External Affairs said. “Gift of the Indian people to the people of Palestine” is plastered on the aid packs.

Egypt’s Rafah border was opened yesterday to allow the first phase of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, devastated by the war and blockade. After days of uncertainty, a little light of humanity came to the battlefront in Gaza on Saturday.

Currently, 20 trucks of the Egyptian Red Crescent have been transported with aid. Hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the war are facing disaster in Gaza, without drinking water and food. Even the injured are fleeing in search of shelter. The Red Crescent has informed that 20 trucks of aid will not be enough in Gaza, which has more than 23 million people.

The next phase of the truck convoy is expected to cross the Rafah border soon, the UN said. It is reported that around 30 trucks will reach Gaza in the second phase.

Apart from India, various countries have already started sending aid to Egypt for Gaza. But Israel’s threat to intensify airstrikes and force people to flee from northern Gaza has raised concerns.
