Effective Measures to Regulate Wild Boar Populations: Walloon Government’s Strong Regulations to Limit Damage and Protect Agricultural Activities

The term may seem strong but it is really regarding strong regulation of wild boar populations, which is equated with destruction, which the Walloon government has spoken regarding in recent days in a press release. The objective is to strike hard to limit the impact of wild boars on agricultural activities and on the damage caused by suids in the territory.

Additional means to regulate wild boars.

Among our Belgian neighbors, the Walloons have decided to really kick in the anthill, or rather in the wallow, to put even more pressure on wild boar populations. Hunting does not seem sufficient to drastically reduce the damage caused by suids in the territory; consequently, the authorities have decided to implement other means of action.

A closing date pushed back.

To allow hunters to take more samples, it was decided to postpone the closing dates for wild boar hunting. For this year, the season will end on February 20.

Usually, the closing date is December 31, although for several years, the closure had already been pushed back to January 31.

Authorization for trapping.

In areas where wild boars are not easily accessible by more traditional hunts, such as in peri-urban areas, wild boar trapping will be authorized.

Night shooting.

Until now, Walloon regulations did not allow shooting at night to regulate wild boar populations. However, many hunters and farmers had for a long time requested authorizations to carry out this type of operation in the most sensitive areas without obtaining them. Things will therefore change and authorizations should be issued in the coming months.

Feeding will gradually be banned.

Feeding has been identified by the Walloon authorities as a vector for the proliferation of wild boars in a territory. If localized feeding made it possible to settle companies in wooded areas, this system was included in a more general ban on feeding wild boars.

Indeed, individuals who sometimes encounter wild boars during a walk or near homes took the opportunity to offer food to the animals, which is always a boon for swine.

Hunters will be able to continue to use feed stations outside of certain periods such as driven hunting, for example.

Wallonia explained that these measures will be effective over a specific period of time but that at the end of the hunting season, studies will be carried out to assess their impact. If good results are noted, particularly with regard to crop damage, they might then be renewed during the next season.
