1995: Filming at Laval University Captures the Nostalgia and Beginnings of Director Ricardo Trogi

Saturday noon, the Laval University campus is invaded by cameras, booms and technicians.

” We turn ! “, shouts the flamboyant director Ricardo Trogi.

The doors of the Charles-De Koninck pavilion open suddenly. A disorganized Jean-Carl Boucher emerges running, dressed in a jacket and tie.

The actor, who plays Ricardo Trogi, runs down the steps and rushes into a red car straight out of the 90s.

Seconds following he leaves, a panting security guard makes the same journey. Arriving at the foot of the steps, he discovers to his exasperation that the young man has run away.

” Cut ! », says Ricardo Trogi with satisfaction.

Two days of filming in Quebec

The scene shot Saturday lunchtime is part of the opening sequence of the 1995 film, which is expected to hit theaters next summer.

“There is something illegal that happens at the beginning of the film,” explains Jean-Carl Boucher, in an interview with Le Soleil. Nothing too serious, but just enough for Ricardo to get chased by a security guard. It’s the beginning of the story and we immediately understand where Ricardo’s character is in 1994.”

The team wanted to shoot the exterior scenes of the feature film in Quebec. “There are places in the script where we really needed to show the city because the beginning of the story takes place in Quebec,” mentions Jean-Carl Boucher.

Ricardo’s first creative steps

The 1995 film recounts the director’s beginnings in the artistic world, when he was selected to participate in the show La Course destination monde 1994-95 edition of Radio-Canada.

The opportunity completely changed Ricardo Trogi’s life, he tells Le Soleil. “I had tried to do this show three times. I knew 95% that this show was going to get me to where I am today. It was the best gateway. »

As part of this experience, Ricardo must produce around twenty short reports around the world. The film focuses particularly on his report on excision in Egypt, made halfway through the run.

“It was the most difficult film for me to make, but also the one that had the most repercussions,” says Ricardo Trogi.

Always nostalgic…

1995 will retain the nostalgic aspect of this series of autobiographical films, assures the director.

“The nostalgia for me in that is that it was my first steps into something I didn’t know. It was above all regarding entering the artistic world. To say: I’m going to be an artist. That was a big step,” says the director.

The 90s will also be reflected by the absence of smartphones. “It was a mess organizing a film at that time, the year before emails,” says Ricardo Trogi.

Coordination, transport of equipment, delivery of cassettes, “there was really nothing simple”, he remembers. “I don’t get bored of it,” adds the director with a laugh.

….But less romantic

While Ricardo’s conquests were a major part of the last three films, this will be less the case in 1995.

“There is a certain underlying love story because like everyone, I always have someone in my head. But the film focuses more on my desire to be an artist and the relationship with my father in relation to that,” says the director.

Filming for 1995 began in early October in Montreal. The team is in Quebec this weekend and will fly to Europe shortly to film the majority of the scenes in Morocco.
