The organization of United Nations stressed, on Friday, the importance of regional agreements and diplomatic channels in the prevention of conflicts in the world.

Regional agreements have “a critical role to play” in a context of high geopolitical tensions, UN Under-Secretary-General Khaled Khiari said at a meeting of the Security Council on Friday.

“The world has entered a new era, the post-war period is over and a transition is underway towards a new world order,” he said, noting that competition between States was increasingly putting pressure on further tests the limits established by the Charter of the United Nations.

Warning once morest the risks of escalation in several regions of the world, the UN official stressed that diplomacy involved “taking risks” and showing creativity, and that it remained crucial between countries at odds.

“Regional agreements find their place in this momentum. They can ensure the credibility and legitimacy of preventive diplomacy, contribute to strengthening confidence, and bring within them crisis management mechanisms,” he said.

He considered it important to strengthen regional frameworks, particularly in regions where the long-standing security system is collapsing or is at an impasse.

The meeting was organized by Brazil, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of October.
