“It is no longer possible for the absolute lack of food, basic necessities and even water to continue” confessed Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, when speaking regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip. It was a declaration at the summit convened today in Cairo (Egypt) where fifty countries participated. For the minister, who represents his country in that meeting, “The expectation is that an awareness will be created that the time is coming to put an end to this bloodshed.”.
Thus, Brazil demanded concrete measures, before a leadership in which several European and Middle Eastern countries, as well as Qatar, Turkey and Jordan, are present. Vieira opted for an effective discussion on the peace process, which has failed until now because there were no agreements in the United Nations Security Council.
The United States vetoed a Brazilian initiative in the SC and prevented the call to end the conflict from succeeding. That was a “light” proposal, since it sought to avoid the North American refusal. Now, the project is more ambitious: not only addresses the opening of humanitarian corridors but will also demand an immediate ceasefire, especially from the Israeli bombings that have continued even in southern Gaza, where the Palestinians are refugees.
According to Lula da Silva’s government, Brazil “has followed with concern the escalation of violence and the deterioration of the security situation in the region.” Vieira added: “We regret to witness these conditions right on the third anniversary of the Oslo Accords. If we had seen progress since then, we would be celebrating peace and friendship. However, the situation before us today is very serious.”

The Brazilian Foreign Minister mentioned that “like many other countries, we also have citizens waiting to be evacuated from Gaza, while we observe with alarm the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the region, especially the lack of medical supplies, food, water, electricity and fuel. Israel, as an occupying power, has specific responsibilities under international humanitarian and human rights law; and these must be fulfilled under any circumstances.”
A group of 30 Brazilians, including children and the elderly, wait to leave Gaza through the border with Egypt. The Brazilian government maintains, until now, a fluid dialogue with the Palestinian authorities in the West Bank, as well as with the Egyptian government and is awaiting authorization to proceed with the rescue of its fellow citizens.
