Lukas Pertl has a good feeling in South Korea: “That’s why we do triathlon”

The Gastein triathlete did not win as many World Cup points as hoped at the classic in Tongyeong ahead of his brother Philip Pertl. But the performance makes him confident.

A 35th place can feel so different. A week ago in Chengdu, China, Lukas Pertl was dissatisfied. On Saturday in Tongyeong, South Korea, which was only supposedly close – the journey from China took almost 20 hours – the Gastein triathlete also had to give way to 34 athletes. But: “It has a completely different value. The good feeling outweighs it,” says the older of the Pertl brothers. Unlike Philip, who competed in his last international competition of the season in South Korea, Lukas will compete in Vina del Mar, Chile, in November. “The performance gives another boost.”

Intense sprint in South Korea

At the World Cup classic in Tongyeong, the Pertls experienced a similar race over the sprint distance. “As expected, it was very fast and very stressful. Full action from start to finish. It was fun, that’s why we do triathlon,” says Lukas Pertl. Swimming with a wetsuit in the water temperature of just over 20 degrees in the harbor basin was successful. Both Pongauers found themselves on the bike in the large chasing group and put in a committed but unrewarding performance. Disunity in the group ultimately increased the gap to the leaders.

Lukas Pertl leaves his brother behind

Many good runners then set off on the hunt at the same time. Lukas Pertl crossed the finish line in 35th place ahead of Philip Pertl, who finished in 44th place. “The run was really great. My running performance wasn’t exceptionally good, but solid with 15:20 minutes over five kilometers and a few meters in altitude,” emphasizes Lukas. “I’m happy with that.”
