Prioritizing Security, Justice, and Integration: The MR’s Perspective on Immigration and Asylum

“These are problems that have been on the agenda for a long time,” anticipates Pierre-Yves Jeholet, who rejects all accusations of political exploitation. “The MR has made security and justice a priority. Besides that, there is a problem of immigration and asylum. I obviously do not link the two in any way, but we need more firmness on these issues.”

The day following the attack perpetrated by Abdesalem Lassoued, the MR demanded a series of measures including that of implementing the immediate expulsion of those radicalized. PS and Ecolo stepped up to denounce the exploitation of the attack. “They want to caricature us as being opposed to immigration, but at a given moment, there is a firmness that we must have,” says Pierre-Yves Jeholet.

Vivaldi disagrees: MR and VLD defend a firmer migration policy, the PS does not want the attack to be exploited

This firmness involves a strengthening of the compulsory integration process, put in place in 2004 in Flanders, in 2016 in Wallonia and “only in 2022 in Brussels, where the problem was most acute”.

The integration of newcomers involves teaching “citizenship, rules, rights, but also duties, legislation and learning French”. “I am not forcing anyone to live in Belgium if they do not share its rules, its rights and its customs. But following the integration process, have people progressed enough to emancipate themselves and integrate? To ask the question, is to answer it. I think that at some point, we need to link social benefits to successful completion of the integration pathway exam. It seems absolutely essential to me.”

To protect ourselves from new terrorist situations, the MR believes that we must also fight once morest Islamism. To do this, the party advocates the defense of neutrality. “Out of electoral interest, some parties do not want to name the problems. In Brussels, we are not far from a powder magazine. In Brussels, we had to wait until 2022 to put in place the compulsory integration pathway. The goal is to integrate them so that they can live in society, be emancipated, and so that they can build a future for their children. I feel like it’s not working the way it should work. There are responsibilities at all levels of power. But it is also by condemning radicalism and Islamism that we will ensure that living together will have a place for everyone here.”

Vivaldi is mired in an uncontrollable migration crisis: “A government that does not respect its laws sends shivers down your spine”

On the question of neutrality, Minister Jeholet considers that a very clear separation is necessary. “When we go to Arab countries, we don’t do what we want, we don’t dress the way we want. The problem of the burkini in swimming pools, for example, I cannot accept as Minister of Sports. There are things that are wrong. Communitarianism also means “Live as you wish, live as if you lived in your country of origin”. That, I say no.”
