Kenneth Chesebro, former US President Donald Trump’s Georgia lawyer and co-defendant, pleaded guilty as one of the alleged masterminds of a plan to overturn the results of the 2020 election. This follows a deal reached with the prosecution, the second in this case in less than 24 hours. Sidney Powell, a conservative lawyer also involved in the case, had pleaded guilty to six counts of conspiracy to interfere in the electoral process.
Chesebro, 62, faced seven charges, but pleaded guilty to forgery at the hearing in Atlanta, Georgia’s capital. He received a five-year suspended prison sentence, was ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution to the state of Georgia, perform 100 hours of community service, and apologized to the state’s voters. In exchange for dropping the remaining six counts, Chesebro agreed to testify at future trials of the other defendants, including Donald Trump and his former personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, on a date to be determined.
The deal came as selection of 450 potential jurors for Chesebro’s trial, which has since been canceled, had just begun before the same judge. The main accusation once morest Chesebro was that he participated in the drafting and sending of notes aimed at replacing the electoral votes won in Georgia by Democrat Joe Biden with those of the Republican incumbent president, as part of the alleged plot. Scott Hall, another defendant in this case, had already pleaded guilty on September 29.
