“Super Mario Bros. Wonder”: the plumber changes era

At the time, it was a revolution. Super Mario Bros. first appeared in 1985 and became one of the best-selling video games of all time, selling over 40 million copies. The success of this creation and its main character, the famous plumber with a mustache, led to the cascade production of three sequels, until Super Mario World in 1990. Then, radio silence. It took sixteen years, during which the very genre of the 2D platform game – where the player controls an avatar who must jump on platforms suspended in the air and avoid obstacles – slowly fell into disuse…

Except for a certain Mario. Another quadrilogy later (2006-2012), and here it is once more put in the fridge for eleven years, until the unexpected presentation of Mario Wonder, in June. In the meantime, the platform genre has found a second youth thanks to games like Celeste (2018) or Shovel Knight (2014), developed by small independent studios.
