Italy and Slovenia Implement Border Controls amid Terrorism and Migration Concerns

Citing the threat of terrorism and increased illegal migration, Italy and Slovenia are starting border controls at Schengen internal borders.

Border controls start on Saturday. Italy controls the border with Slovenia and the neighboring country controls those with Croatia and Hungary, it was said.

Both countries have the measure initially for ten days – until October 30th – announced. According to politicians, Italy and Slovenia are currently expecting one Duration of up to two months.

Austria, for its part, has introduced border controls with the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

In view of the “intensifying crises at Europe’s borders, especially following the attack on Israel,” concerns regarding terrorist attacks have grown, Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi explained the decision on Thursday.

The Slovenian government, for its part, gave the green light on Thursday for controls at the Schengen internal borders with Croatia and Hungary. “We don’t want radical people or people with terrorist intentions to come via the Western Balkan route,” emphasized Interior Minister Boštjan Poklukar. The Slovenian authorities had already indirectly expressed their dissatisfaction with the inadequate protection of the Schengen external border by the new Schengen country Croatia.
