“I don’t like to publicize this kind of subject, but it’s really unspeakable,” says Julie Patte (PS), alderman for Education in Charleroi. “They didn’t just steal the school’s computers, they opened the fire extinguishers and poured them everywhere, they dumped ammonia or urine, they knocked over bags of confetti planned for Halloween, they turned over the desks, the cupboards… It’s gratuitous, incomprehensible, unspeakable…”
Many premises of the basic school, which welcomes primary and nursery school children, were affected. Classes were canceled this Friday, and the psychological support unit was activated for teachers and staff. “It’s like their second home, at any time if they need to talk to someone, professionals are at their disposal, because they are – rightly – shocked and overwhelmed by the violence of what is going on. it happened”, adds the alderman, who also indicates that the holidays will be used to have the school cleaned by a specialized industrial cleaning company, via the establishment’s insurance. “And in the meantime, the police have obviously been notified. I sincerely hope that we will catch the perpetrators!”
The services of the City of Charleroi have already visited the site on Friday morning. They changed the door cylinders, repaired what had been broken, and reset the alarm.
Classes will be suspended on Monday when they resume – with a welcome in the gym, untouched, for parents who have no alternative – to give teachers a day to put their affairs in order and prepare for recovery. No link with the attempted fires linked to EVRAS courses has been established.
