It is a decision that he himself describes as “unorthodox” that the resigning Dutch Minister of Climate and Energy, Rob Jetten, has just taken. In a letter addressed to Parliament, he explained that he had asked Dutch electricity network managers to contact companies that consume large amounts of electricity to encourage them to reduce their consumption during peak hours – from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. An emergency measure justified by the state of the Dutch electricity network, close to saturation in all provinces. Through what is called “demand management”, Rob Jetten hopes to relieve the network and prevent it from collapsing, causing large-scale power outages.
