Last month we talked regarding the Pixel Pals — application created by Christian Selig (name behind the late Apollo) which, among other things, allows you to add virtual pets to various corners of iOS, such as widgets and even the Dynamic Island (Dynamic Island).
This time, Selig is adding another very interesting feature to the app, which promises to help you learn a new language — or at least a few words. This is a new widget called Language Palwhich displays new words from time to time on your Home screen so you can increase your vocabulary.

The new feature uses iOS 17’s interactive widgets to work and takes the form of a quiz. First, you add the Language Pal to your Home screen, choose a language from the widget options and wait for the word to appear. The idea is that you try to guess its meaning by selecting the option (out of three available) with the correct translation.
According to the developer, the idea behind the widget is not to turn Pixel Pals into a kind of Duolingo, but rather to be just another tool to aid your learning. It can also be used on iPads running iPadOS 17 and supports the following languages: French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, German, Arabic, Korean, Hindi and, interestingly, Canadian English.
The widget obviously indicates whether you chose the correct alternative or not, in addition to displaying a summary with your score at the end of a round. Best of all, though, is that, unlike Pixel Pals’ other features, it’s completely free to use.
A practical and fun way to expand your vocabulary, right? ????
