In Italy there will be a nationwide strike on October 20th.

On Friday, travel by bus, train and plane within the country and across borders is only possible to a limited extent.

Swiss is therefore canceling many flights, even the evening before.

Four major unions have called for a nationwide general strike in Italy on Friday. This mainly affects public transport, airports and highways. The walkout is a protest measure once morest planned labor market reforms and austerity measures by the Italian government, write Italian media. In addition to tourism, many areas of public and private life are likely to be affected by the all-day standstill.

1,800 Swiss passengers affected

A total of 20 flights to and from Milan, Venice, Naples, Florence and Bologna were canceled. One flight was already canceled from the flight schedule on Thursday evening, as Swiss media spokesman Michael Pelzer said when asked by 20 Minutes. “The flights to Rome, Brindisi, Bari and Palermo will generally operate normally and are unlikely to be affected by the strike.” During individual time slots at the airports on strike, a few flights are still possible. “We very much regret the circumstances that have arisen and are doing everything we can to get our passengers to their destination as quickly as possible,” said Pelzer. Passengers affected by the strike will be proactively contacted by the airline and rebooked accordingly.

Effects on SBB still open

Significant restrictions are also to be expected in domestic rail traffic, as train connections will be affected. Commuters and travelers should prepare for delays and cancellations and consider alternative means of transport, as the state railway company Trenitalia writes on its website. Regional trains are guaranteed from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

There are no known effects on cross-border train journeys to Milan or Venice, as the SBB announced upon request.

In many cantons the autumn holidays end on Sunday. Travelers returning from Italy should prepare for delays and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
