As revealed by a study carried out by the Walloon Road Safety Agency detailed in the columns of Sudinfo, the police noted 84,497 traffic light violations in 2022, or more than 230 per day. Across Wallonia, there are 10,128, an average of 28 each day.
Running a red light or even going orange can be reprimanded by the authorities. In fact, a police officer can fine you 116 euros excluding administrative costs if he catches you going through an orange light.
However, there are exceptions, such as when a motorist cannot stop in time without jeopardizing their safety.
But on the other hand, if a motorist voluntarily turns orange, the police officer might consider that it is indeed a burnt light and can, if necessary, punish you as if you had run a red light. You would therefore receive a fine of 174 euros. Sanctions can even be heavier (temporary license withdrawal) for young drivers, our colleagues reveal.
This also applies to pedestrians and cyclists, 1,141 and 2,246 of whom respectively did not respect traffic lights in Belgium. If they get caught, it’s also 174 euros.
