For several years, Xiaomi has been steadily accelerating its schedule. While its latest high-end – but relatively affordable – smartphones, the Xiaomi 13T and 13T Pro, were announced at the end of September, the Chinese manufacturer is already preparing to take the next step and intends to present its Xiaomi 14 this month of October.
On the Chinese social network WeiboLu Weibing, president of Xiaomi, has indeed indicated that the Xiaomi 14 range “equipped with Leica Summilux lenses will be released this month”. It also relays a publication of the official Xiaomi account presenting the innovations brought by the partnership between the Chinese smartphone manufacturer and the German photo brand:
Xiaomi and Leica jointly offer a next-generation optical system solution consisting of the most perfect Leica Summilux lens to date in the field of mobile imaging and a new professional high-dynamic image sensor for mobile optics, allowing mobile devices to truly have full-time access. Very powerful instant and precise capture capabilities in all situations and scenarios.
A very wide aperture lens
As a reminder, the Summilux range is historically a range of camera lenses offering a particularly wide aperture, less than f/2 and generally around f/1.4. Enough to allow, once associated with a camera, to capture more light and offer optical background blurs with natural bokeh. Obviously, more information will be needed before knowing more regarding the photo performance of the future Xiaomi 14, as background blur on smartphones is often generated primarily by software processing in the absence of sufficiently long focal length optics. and large sensors.
Furthermore, if Xiaomi and Leica seem to have agreed on the use of the term “Summilux” for the lens of the future Xiaomi 14, it is unlikely that Leica itself manufactured the lens of the smartphone. In the vast majority of cases, partnerships between smartphone manufacturers and photo manufacturers (Xiaomi and Leica, Vivo and Zeiss or Hasselblad and OnePlus) are limited to research and development work on the best optical formula and software processing.
We should know more regarding the Xiaomi 14 range in the coming weeks. For the moment, the manufacturer has not indicated on what date the different smartphones will be presented. Last year, the smartphones were presented in China on December 19. It therefore seems that Xiaomi intends to present them earlier this year.
