The death of Hubert Reeves shook Charlevois residents on Friday. This is the case of Jean-Michel Gastonguay, also a science popularizer and founder of the Charlevoix Astronomical Observatories. He met him on a few occasions and paid tribute to him on social networks.
“Of course, for me, it’s a form of guide. He was there for the very beginnings of our general public activities related to astronomy,” remembers Mr. Gastonguay.
Hubert Reeves loved the Charlevoix region. A unique space bearing his name has been taking shape since 2009. The project was targeted on this land in Pointe-au-Pic. The $20 million project is closer than ever to being realized. In the next six months, its board hopes to collect 90% of the funding. An amount of $7.5 million has already been raised. Moreover, negotiations are going well with Quebec.
“On the private side, things are also going very well. At the beginning of 2024, we will probably carry out a popular campaign so that people can contribute to the finality of the financial package. There is also obviously still a lot of work to do with the federal government,” underlines Mr. Tremblay.
The Earth Sciences Interpretation Center would be built to the greenest standards possible. The building is described as a spherical theater, a dome projecting digital images over 360 degrees. We want to establish one of the unique museums ever created.
“When I spoke to him, he kept telling me that he did not want a mausoleum in his honor. He wanted to have a living space open to the modern world that might interest people in science, including young people,” mentions the project leader.
“It becomes even more relevant because it would really allow us to pay homage to him,” believes Jean-Michel Gastonguay.
If the financial package is finalized, the Hubert Reeves space will see the light of day in the summer of 2025.
