It is now confirmed: Activision-Blizzard-King is joining the Xbox team, the various regulatory authorities having finally validated the takeover. The gigantic American publisher therefore sees itself absorbed by an even larger American company, which is not to displease the latter.

A long-term story

In January 2022, Microsoft shook the industry by announcing its plan to buy Activision-Blizzard-King for the sum of 69 billion dollars : an absolute earthquake not only for video games, but also for tech itself since it is neither more nor less the biggest absorption in the sector, quite simply.

However, the path was strewn with pitfalls: already because several countries simply did not agree and did not immediately give their green light, thus slowing down the process; then because Sony in particular has gone out of its way to put obstacles in the way of its historic competitor.

Microsoft thus had to make some concessions in order to reassure the industry of its future and sudden rise in power, for example by ensuring the release of Call of Duty games on competing platforms (PlayStation and even Nintendo!) or by making Activision games available on certain cloud gaming platforms, despite the xCloud offered in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

In short, following long months of legal battle, causing a staggering quantity of leaks concerning the various market players, Microsoft has finally had authorization to buy Activision-Blizzard-King… and is making it known loud and clear.

An announcement trailer to impress

So just a few days ago, Microsoft published directly on the Xbox YouTube channel a one minute and fifty-four second trailer, named “Activision Blizzard joins Xbox”: a simple sentence but whose clarity and officiality prove formidable.

In the video, the Redmont firm then likes to compile all the franchises and all the games now in its possession ; not just those of Activision or Blizzard, no, but also its long-standing IPs or those acquired during the takeover of Bethesda. We can also hear two orcs from World of Warcraft exchanging a few heartfelt words: “So, is this our place now?”, to which the other responds “Home, family”, an immediate reference to the gigantic ecosystem shaped in recent years, with big checks and voracious appetites.

From Call of Duty to Crash Bandicoot via Sekiro, Crash Bandicoot (the extract of which in the video is also from his PSOne adventures, then Sony exclusives!), Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Halo, Gears of War, Prototype, Forza, Starfield, Psychonauts, Candy Crush and many others, this trailer (to be enjoyed in our player above) boasts a now well-stocked and definitely aggressive portfolio of IPs. Now, let’s see what direction Phil Spencer will take them!
