They have been dragging their gaiters there for 70 years. It is an understatement to say that Egyptian intelligence agents – in charge of Palestinian affairs since the mid-1950s – know Gaza like the back of their hand. They are almost home there. The approach of a massive Israeli offensive in Gaza, or even a “total war”, reverses the landscape: hundreds of thousands of Gazans will, perhaps, have to look for a new home beyond the Egyptian border…

The prospect of a mass expulsion of Gaza residents to Sinai – the Israelis call it a “transfer” – is a specter that has hovered over the region for decades. In a way, the Trump administration brought it back into the spotlight four years ago. The “plan of the century”, drawn up by Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, thus provided for gigantic investments on the Egyptian side of the border. The goal: to make Sinai the heart of Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation, providing the region with an airport and ports financed by petrodollars from Gulf countries, as far as possible from the Israeli border.
