The opening of the first franchised (or self-managed) Delhaize took place on Wednesday morning in the north of the Brussels Region, in Laeken. The takeover of the store is part of the brand’s plan to return to the growth of its 128 integrated supermarkets, intended to become franchisees. No action was planned by workers and unions on Wednesday.
Located on Avenue de la Brise, a stone’s throw from the Atomium, the Delhaize Mutsaard opened its doors at 8:00 a.m. Farid El Kadri, the new operator of the recently franchised store, says he is “very motivated by the idea of this takeover”, and is delighted to “start this new chapter in its history with Delhaize”, we can read in a press release .
The independent buyer started working for the supermarket brand in 2003. In 2013, he became affiliated and opened his first Proxy Delhaize in Saint-Gilles, before taking over the management of a Proxy in Anderlecht in 2016, before to open another in the center of Brussels.
Delhaize Mustaard, on an area of 2,000 square meters, has 71 employees.

Since the announcement that the brand would franchise its 128 supermarkets, unions have denounced the harmful consequences for Delhaize employees. Today, however, no union action is planned.
