Jim Jordan fails: Republicans cannot agree on new speakerKevin McCarthy voted out: US House of Representatives is looking for a new speakerDauerchaos im US-Parliament: US Congress chamber largely paralyzed
Update from October 18th, 2:45 a.m.: Jim Jordan, the current chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, wants to try to break internal party resistance following his failure in the first round and thus take the third highest office in the USA. The next round of elections in the chamber, which has been paralyzed for two weeks, was scheduled for Wednesday, 11 a.m. (local time; 5 p.m. CEST).
A lack of a majority had also become apparent in Jordan in the run-up to the vote on Tuesday. Many moderate Republicans have major reservations regarding Jordan, who is known for sharply right-wing positions and an aggressive political style.
“I would encourage people not to be surprised if it takes a few rounds,” Republican Representative Austin Scott told the right-wing news channel Fox News, referring to the election of a chairman. Rep. Scott Perry said Jordan wrestled many rounds in his previous career as a wrestler. “I think he can last until the end.”

Election in the US House of Representatives: Jordan fails in the first round
Update from October 17th, 8:31 p.m.: The arch-conservative US Republican Jim Jordan has initially failed in the election of a new chairman of the House of Representatives. In a first vote in the Chamber of Congress on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump’s ally clearly missed the required majority of 217 votes. In addition to the Democrats, 20 Republicans also voted once morest the 59-year-old hardliner, who was running to succeed Chairman Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted two weeks ago. Jordan announced that he would run for a second round of voting. His predecessor, McCarthy, needed 15 attempts to be elected Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Republicans vote on Jim Jordan
First report from October 17th: Washington, DC – Jim Jordan, a staunchly conservative representative of the US Republican Party, wants to be elected as the new chairman of the House of Representatives on Tuesday (October 17th). However, his chances of success are uncertain. A vote is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. CEST) in the congressional chamber, which has been largely paralyzed for two weeks. However, many moderate Republicans have significant concerns regarding the right-wing hardliner Jordan, who is a confidant of former President Donald Trump.
The Republicans only have a narrow majority in the House of Representatives with 221 members. Therefore, it is unclear whether Jordan can achieve the required majority of 217 votes in the plenary session. If all 212 Democratic members of President Joe Biden vote once morest the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Jordan might allow a maximum of four deviations from his own ranks.
US House of Representatives: Search for a successor to Kevin McCarthy
Trump-backed Jordan was nominated on Friday (October 13) in the Republicans’ chaotic search for a successor to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted at the beginning of October. The day before, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, initially nominated by the Republican faction, threw in the towel following it became clear that he would miss the necessary majority for the third-highest state office in the plenary session.
However, Jordan, known for his aggressive political style, is even more controversial than Scalise. After Jordan’s nomination, according to media reports, 55 Republicans signaled in a secret vote that they would not support the Ohio representative in the chamber. At the weekend, the hardliner and those around him put a lot of pressure on opponents within the party to get them to get behind Jordan.
“We all need to continue to come together and get back to work,” Jordan wrote on Monday on the short message service X (formerly Twitter). The Republican faction wanted to meet for consultations in the evening.
US House of Representatives currently unable to act
The dispute among the Republicans has far-reaching consequences: without a chairman, the House of Representatives is largely paralyzed. This means, among other things, that Congress cannot decide on any further military aid for Israel, which is attacked by the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas, or Ukraine, which is attacked by Russia. The USA is also threatened with a so-called shutdown in mid-November without a budget solution.
That’s why the pressure is growing on the Republicans to come to a quick agreement. If Jordan fails in his attempts to bring the conservative faction almost entirely behind him, he might withdraw his candidacy for the presidency, as Scalise did. But he might also stick to the plenary vote despite all resistance – and, for example, try to break the resistance of his opponents through a series of successive votes.

In January, then-Chairman McCarthy fought through a record 15 rounds of voting to be confirmed as “Speaker,” as the office is called in the United States. But just nine months later, the California representative was pushed from the throne of the House of Representatives in a historic coup by right-wing hardliners in his own party. The fall was the result of a budget dispute over additional support for Ukraine.
Jordan is considered a die-hard Trump supporter
Jordan, McCarthy’s possible successor, has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2007. He began his political career on the right-wing fringe of the Republicans, but over the years he has developed into a central figure in the party, which has drifted further and further to the right. Jordan is one of the key players behind efforts to impeach US President Joe Biden over allegations of involvement in controversial foreign dealings by his son Hunter Biden.
