ASUNCION (AP) — Paraguay’s players smiled once more on Tuesday, beating Bolivia 1-0 with a goal from Antonio Sanabria, to place themselves in the playoff zone for the next World Cup.
The Paraguayan team, which had dismissed coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto following the previous double round of the tie, has revived with this victory under the orders of also Argentine Daniel Garnero.
“We have been looking for this victory for a long time,” said Sanabria, current forward for Torino in Italy, in statements to local television. “We will continue fighting in the other games of these playoffs to try to win.”
Paraguay reached four points and was placed in the seventh place, which grants the right to compete in an intercontinental playoff as a way to access the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The first six advance directly.
“The victory was very sacrificed because no rival gives anything away,” commented midfielder Mathías Villasanti.
Bolivia, which remains without points as the worst team in the tie, had endured the local siege without much difficulty, defending itself from the beginning of the game until Sanabria appeared in the 68th minute to connect a mid-height cross from the right, launched by Mathías Espinoza.
“We have to work more; We were good once morest Paraguay, we played solid but a mistake cost us defeat,” reflected Bolivian goalkeeper Guillerno Viscarra. “We are leaving the field sad,” he added, referring to the Defensores del Chaco stadium in Asunción.
On the 16th of next month Bolivia will host Peru and the Paraguayans will visit Chile.
