Constantly in front of the screen: How to avoid tired, dry eyes

Many of us spend several hours every day in front of the computer or cell phone. This means hard work for our eyes. But there are simple tricks that can alleviate problems with computer-tired eyes – known in technical jargon as “Office Eye Syndrome”.

“Long hours in front of the screen simply put excessive strain on our eyes. Because they have to constantly focus on a small area at a constant distance. The consequences: the blinking of the eyes is reduced and the tear film is no longer sufficiently renewed,” says Philipp Orso, state guild master the eye and contact lens optician. In practice, this means dry, itchy, burning, tired, stressed, sometimes red eyes in combination with blurred vision and sensitivity to light. According to the expert, this is what you should keep in mind:

The right glasses: “The requirements for glasses vary depending on the activity – many people are not aware of that. Because each pair of glasses is designed for a different purpose,” says Orso. “And we need special support, especially when working on a screen, which demands a lot from our visual organs. For this purpose, the lenses are optimally adapted to the individual viewing distance from the computer or laptop.”

Set up your workplace optimally: The workplace should be set up according to needs. The most important thing here is an upright posture and the correct positioning in relation to the screen. This should be placed approximately 70 to 90 cm away from the eyes and centrally in the field of vision so that the viewer looks straight ahead and hits the top edge of the screen without rotating the head. “And if you notice that it is difficult for you to maintain an upright posture, you can get relief with a cushion. This can easily be clamped between the back and the chair and thus prevents the position from slipping,” says Orso.

Lots of daylight and fresh air: Daylight should be used as much as possible. “Set up the workspace accordingly,” says Orso. Something that many people forget, but is no less important: regular ventilation! “Even if it’s over 30 degrees outside or the ice-cold draft is hard to bear in winter, fresh air is necessary and helps to increase the humidity. Otherwise, air conditioning and heating will also lead to dry eyes.”

Less screen time: Anyone who already spends many hours at the computer at work, studying or for school should use both their breaks and their free time to relieve the strain on their eyes. “In order to avoid long-term vision problems and an increase in nearsightedness, our eyes must be able to constantly look into the distance – ideally, of course, in daylight,” recommends Orso. The time on cell phones, tablets and laptops should be kept as short as possible for the sake of our eyes – even in childhood. After all, around a third of children in Austria are already nearsighted and there are forecasts that by 2050 half of the world’s population will no longer be able to see clearly into the distance.

Take breaks and get up: In order to be able to do hard work, our eyes absolutely need breaks from the screen. When we look at the screen, we blink too rarely, which causes our eyes to become dry and irritated. “We also prevent the eyes from recovering by looking into the distance,” says the state guild master and therefore advises taking regular breaks. Getting up every now and then, going for a walk or doing a few jumping jacks not only relaxes our sensory organs, but also prevents poor posture.
