Stan Wawrinka (ATP 46) started his fall indoor season victoriously. The 38-year-old Vaudois dominated Croatian Borna Gojo (ATP 76) 7-5 6-4 in the first round of the ATP 250 in Stockholm.
Defeated from the start in the two tournaments of his brief Asian tour (Astana and Shanghai), Stan Wawrinka took 1h31′ to get his ticket to the round of 16. The former world No. 3 will meet at this stage of the competition the “lucky loser” Tomas Machac (81).
One move to play
This will be his first face-to-face with the Czech, beaten in the last round of qualifying but drafted following the withdrawal of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (26). Doubly lucky, Machac has also “inherited” the status of No. 4 seed reserved for the Spaniard and is therefore exempt from the 1st round.
Stan Wawrinka therefore has a good chance to play in the Swedish capital, where he has not played since the 2011 edition following this convincing success once morest Gojo, eighth finalist of the recent US Open. The highest ranked player in his quarter of the table is the Serbian Laslo Djere (35).
