Many specialty crop harvests are near completion as corn and soybean harvests continue

FARGO, N.D. — For the week ending October 15, 2023, there were 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 5% very short, 19% short, 72% adequate, and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 8% very short, 29% short, 60% adequate, and 3% surplus.

Field Crops Report: Soybean condition rated 5% very poor, 13% poor, 40% fair, 39% good, and 3% excellent. Soybeans harvested was 66%, behind 73% last year, but ahead of 59% for the five-year average.

Winter wheat condition rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 28% fair, 61% good, and 3% excellent. Winter wheat planted was 90%, near 94% last year and 89% average. Emerged was 70%, near 72% last year and 68% average.

Corn condition rated 2% very poor, 7% poor, 27% fair, 58% good, and 6% excellent. Corn mature was 96%, near 92% last year, and ahead of 86% average. Harvested was 27%, near 23% last year and 24% average.

Canola harvested was 94%, near 96% last year and 95% average.

Sugarbeet condition rated 2% very poor, 6% poor, 30% fair, 60% good, and 2% excellent. Sugarbeets harvested was 64%, behind 73% last year, but ahead of 56% average.

Sunflower condition rated 0% very poor, 5% poor, 25% fair, 63% good, and 7% excellent. Sunflowers bracts turned yellow was 97%, equal to last year, and near 98% average. Bracts turned brown was 87%, near 91% last year and 90% average. Harvested was 7%, behind 24% last year and 20% average.

Flaxseed harvested was 87%, near 91% last year, and behind 94% average.

Potatoes harvested was 96%, equal to last year, and ahead of 83% average.

Dry edible beans harvested was 92%, near 94% last year, but ahead of 86% average.

Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 2% very poor, 12% poor, 35% fair, 50% good, and 1% excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 3% very short, 13% short, 81% adequate, and 3% surplus.
